Judy Greer Q&A: I Started My Career With Super Sex

Publish date: 2024-08-22

Everyone’s favorite best friend Judy Greer (“Arrested Development,” “13 Going on 30,” “The Wedding Planner”) will return to network TV in the FX series “Married,” a frank and funny look at wedded life. She also recently published a memoir, aptly titled “I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star.”

The title of your book is so perfect; what do most people recognize you from?

Probably “Arrested Development” right now, but it changes depending on what’s on television. I was on one episode of “The Big Bang Theory” and it must play every day, because I see it so often. “13 Going on 30” is another big one.

You’ve really embraced the “best friend” label.

Well, it’s been really good to me. And I don’t feel like I’m the best friend anymore; I feel I sort of graduated to the wife-mother. I think for awhile, I was the weepy wife-mother, but now I’m graduating to cool, strong wife-mothers.

Was it awkward when it came to the sex scenes on “Married” with Nat Faxon, who plays your husband?

Not really. There’s one scene we shot where we’re having super sex and it was a bit uncomfortable. There’s a lot of joking, which helps take the weirdness away. Sometimes you have to let go of how totally weird it is with someone you don’t know in front of a lot of strangers.

What’s super sex?

Where you’re really, really having intense sex. It’s a strange thing to do. I did it in “Three Kings,” but it’s been a long time. So I started my career with super sex. Hopefully it’s not going to end with super sex. Or, actually, maybe that’s a great way to go out.

You play an ape in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” What drew you to the role?

I thought it would be fun to be part of a big franchise movie. I really wanted to work with Andy Serkis, and I was intrigued by motion capture. But the biggest reason I did it is because my husband is a huge “Planet of the Apes” fan. When he knew there was going to be a sequel, he was like, “You have to be in it, and you have to play an ape.” So my number one reason for doing it was to make my husband happy.
